Meeting Description:

The Regional Languages of France: Challenges and Opportunities in the Twenty-First Century

Les langues régionales de France: défis et opportunités au 21ème siècle

An exciting upcoming conference at the University of Leicester will gather experts on the field of French language policies and planning with a particular focus on regional languages.

Keynote speaker (confirmed): Dr Leigh Oakes, Queen Mary University of London

2nd Call for Papers

The continuing discussions about France’s potential ratification of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages combined with recent developments about national territorial reforms make this a particularly pertinent time to discuss the contemporary position of the French regional languages. An examination of the place and role of regional languages from a political, cultural, sociological and sociolinguistic perspective adds new insight to the public debate. This conference aims to investigate the challenges and opportunities which the different regional languages in France are facing. It will ask how the position of the regional languages has changed since the turn of the twentieth century and consider how this might develop in future decades.

Abstracts of 300 words in English or French for twenty-minute conference presentations are welcomed and can cover a range of sociolinguistic-related themes including, but not restricted to, language policy and planning, the law, language-in-education policy, the linguistic landscape, regional identity, variation and change, language shift and endangerment, language ideologies.

Postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to present papers. Reduced fees for students will be available. Papers may be delivered in English or in French.

The final deadline for submission of abstracts is 10th April 2015. Please send abstracts to FrenchRLsconfleicester.ac.uk.

Organisers: Dr Michelle Harrison and Dr Aurélie Joubert
