Meeting Description: 

The University of the Western Cape is hosting a two and half day LL workshop focusing on dynamic research conducted from the South pertaining to inter alia: interplay between written and oral landscapes, soundscapes, the politics of multilingualism and corporeal sociolinguistics and new methodologies and technologies. This workshop is important as it champions epistemological theory and access regarding linguistic landscapes of the South, specifically focussing on the ‘South’ as a symbolic struggle for equality, power, voice and agency and not simply geographically-defined. In this regard, research pertaining to marginalized communities and the diaspora globally will be of interest at this workshop. The aim of the workshop, therefore, is to uncover latent, absent, silent, oppressed and mobile or corporeal items which construct the LL of the South.

The workshop invites original research from postgrads, young and senior academics alike. As LL studies are largely interdisciplinary, we look forward to papers from: semiotics, literacy studies, political science, art, geography and urban planning (to name a few).

Contributors are encouraged to submit original work which orients towards (but is not restricted to) the following themes:

- Phenomenological approaches to LL
- Oral narrations of place
- Messy multilingualism
- Power and prejudice
- Mobile semiotic landscapes

Important Dates:

- Submission of Abstracts Opens: 1 August 2015
- Submission of Abstracts Closes: 15 October 2015
- Notification of Acceptance: 1 November 2015
- Registration Opens: 10 November 2015
- Workshop Takes Place: 18-20 November 2015

The workshop will accept:

1) Individual papers: Individual papers are formal presentations on original research by one or more authors, lasting a total of 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion). Please note that the time limit will be strictly adhered to. The length of abstracts for individual papers is max 250 words.

2) Posters: Poster sessions are for displaying research and offer the opportunity for individualized further discussions in smaller groups. Posters are also a good format for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork and visual data.
