Description:

The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures at James Madison University invites applications for an Assistant Professor or Lecturer position (tenure-track or revolving term contract) in Applied Linguistics with an emphasis on Spanish for Health related fields. Appointment to begin on August 22, 2016. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background investigation.

Minimum Qualifications: 

- M.A. or M.S. in Spanish for the Professions and/or in Translation/Interpretation Studies (Spanish<>English) and/or Applied Linguistics. N.P.H desirable; ABD and Ph.D. preferable in related fields from an accredited U.S. or equivalent non-U.S. institution. 
- Area of Specialization: Priority will be given to candidates who have expertise in Spanish for Medical Professions. Experience and interest in teaching and developing other Spanish professional courses focused on health care, journalism, engineering and urban planning, legal and justice studies, social work, business, and medical/legal interpretation are desirable. 

The successful candidate must be familiar with the use of multimedia technology in the classrooms.  

The teaching load will be 3/3 with an optional summer course (if available). The successful candidate will also serve as an academic advisor for students pursuing the Medical Spanish minor offered by the department and will provide service to the department, college and/or university (after the first year). 

Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.

Desired Qualifications: 

- Professional experience working in medical fields and other professions. 
- Evidence of successful commitment to undergraduate teaching and evidence of scholarly work. 
- Experience in community outreach to establish strong collaborations through internships and service learning opportunities.
