Meeting Description:

This workshop will address four global issues surrounding the phenomenon of marginal contrasts, i.e., phonological relations that are neither entirely phonemic nor entirely allophonic: (i) finding, investigating, and quantifying marginal contrasts; (ii) representations and consequences of marginal contrasts for synchronic phonological patterns; (iii) implications for diachronic phonological patterns; and (iv) consequences for production and perception. The workshop will include “big picture” talks that provide an overview of each topic, followed by guided discussion. The workshop is intended to bring together researchers who are addressing this phenomenon from a variety of perspectives and methodologies.

Call for Papers: 

There is currently no consensus on what counts as a marginal contrast, whether all marginal contrasts should be treated equally, what the set of empirical and theoretical tools to investigate them should look like, or how phonological theory should shift to accommodate them. The goal of this workshop is to bring together the disparate viewpoints surrounding the notion of marginal contrast, to discuss the methodological state-of-the-art, and to establish directions for future research.

To this end, we are soliciting “big picture” talks on the following four themes:

- finding, investigating, and quantifying marginal contrasts;
- consequences of marginal contrasts for synchronic phonological patterns and representations;
- implications for diachronic phonological patterns; and
- consequences for production and perception.

In addition to identifying a particular theme among those described above, abstracts should link to the broader picture of research on marginal contrasts and intermediate phonological relationships, including perspectives for resolving issues, that would benefit from an in-person discussion. Abstracts should showcase not just the results of each presenter’s own research, but also provide their perspective on other related areas of research, a discussion of the methodologies involved, and thoughts about key areas for future investigation.
