Full Title: Workshop on Information Structure in Endangered Languages
Short Title: ISEL

Date: 08-May-2015 - 08-May-2015
Location: London, United Kingdom
Contact Person: Sandy Ritchie
Meeting Email: tr7 at soas.ac.uk

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Pragmatics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Feb-2015

Meeting Description:

Research on information structure in endangered languages presents some unique challenges, as the necessary data (text collections, large-scale corpora of spoken language) typically do not exist, so researchers are compelled to develop and work with much smaller datasets than are available for large well-studied languages. Despite these limitations, research on these languages has led to significant theoretical and methodological advances in the field of IS.

This workshop will provide a venue for scholars working on IS in endangered languages to present their research and collaborate on the development of new methodologies for field-based research.

The plenary speaker will be Dejan Matic (MPI Psycholinguistics), whose work focuses on IS in the endangered languages of Siberia, as well as theoretical aspects of IS.

Final Call for Papers:

Deadline for abstracts extended to 15 February 2015.

We invite proposals for a workshop on information structure (IS) in endangered languages to be held at SOAS, University of London on 8 May 2015.

We welcome proposals which address pragmatic, semantic, morphosyntactic and/or prosodic aspects of the expression of IS in endangered languages from any theoretical perspective. Proposals which include reference to new methodologies for field-based research are particularly welcome.

Each paper will last 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for questions. A registration fee of £10 (£5 for students) will be payable in cash at the registration desk on the day of the workshop.

Abstracts should be no longer than one page (including references and examples, minimum 11pt font) and should be sent in PDF format to: Sandy Ritchie tr7 at soas.ac.uk. Please submit the abstract anonymously and include the following details in your email:
