Description:
Linguistic Linked Open Data is a topic of emerging importance in the field of natural language processing (NLP). Increasingly, researchers are rendering major linguistic resources, including annotated corpora, lexicons, databases, and ontologies, in a format to enable their exploitation in the Semantic Web. Linking the contents of these resources to each other as well as to common
ontologies can enable access to and discovery of detailed linguistic information, which would be otherwise impossible, and which could, in turn, foster a major leap in NLP research and development.

At the same time, the movement toward open data is growing in the field of NLP. For years, research has been constrained by limited access to corpora, lexicons, and other language resources due to licensing requirements. Researchers and data holders alike are now seeking ways to provide open access to these data in order to promote unfettered use, reuse, and enhancement of
common datasets throughout the field.

Specific topics treated in the school include, but are not limited to:
- Introduction to the semantic web, linked data and knowledge graphs
- Extracting and integrating knowledge on the web from text, semi-structured and structured data
- Ontologies and reasoning
- Query systems using SPARQL
- Design of domain specific query languages
- Linguistic annotations as linked data
- Annotation interoperability
- Taxonomy extraction
- BabelNet as linked data
- Lexicographic linked data

Tutorial sessions coupled with hands-on sessions on the school’s topics will be held Monday through Friday in each week and on Saturday morning, July 18. The full schedule will be available on the school’s website soon.

In addition to the excellence of its academic program, the EUROLAN sequence of summer schools is well known for the camaraderie among professors and students, who may enjoy common activities and events at lunches, in the evenings and in the weekend. Sibiu offers possibilities for extra-curricular activities, many of which will be organized for members of the school. These
include theater events, visits to some of the many Sibiu museums (including the Astra Traditional Folk Civilization Open Air Museum), Romanian Folk entertainment, cultural events arranged by the Sibiu Cultural Agenda 2015, and of course, evenings in local clubs and discos. A full day excursion to one of the magnificent sites in the areas around Sibiu, which include the Salt Lakes Ocna Sibiului, Dumbrava forest and Cisnădioara, and the Adventure Park Arka, will be arranged for Sunday July 19. An alternative would be to visit the Bran Castle (see, for instance, www.bran-castle.com), world-wide known as Dracula's Castle, named after the prince Vlad Țepeș (Vlad "The Impaler"), who inspired Bram Stoker's story of Dracula.

Satellite events
A Doctoral Consortium and a Workshop with a topic related to the EUROLAN-2015 theme will be organised. For the workshop a call for organization will be issued.

Accommodation
Accommodation for EUROLAN students is in the ULBS student dormitories. Prices are 25Ron (~6€)/person/night in rooms with 4 beds, 35Ron (~8€)/person/night in rooms with 3 beds, and 40 Ron(~9€)/person/night in rooms with 2 beds. Other more luxurious options are of course possible too.
