Description:

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL, http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/), the institute of linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University, is hosting a 4 year research programme entitled "Ellipsis Licensing Beyond Syntax" (http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/news-events/news/vc-cheng-liptak-ellipsis.html) funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, NWO. 

This project is an integrated study of the syntax, prosody and morphology of elliptical constructions. There are three subprojects, two on the syntax-prosody interface and one on the morphology of ellipsis. We are looking for a PhD student to carry out the subproject "Ellipsis and prosodic phrasing/cliticization".

Duties and Responsibilities:
The position comprises the following tasks: 
- conduct original research on the following topics: 
- syntactic and prosodic aspects of cliticization in elliptical sentences in South Slavic languages, Irish and Flemish; 
- the interaction of accentuation and cliticization in ellipsis in the above languages; 
- the prosodic phrasing of elliptical constructions; 
- modelling the interaction between syntax and prosody in ellipsis; 
- conducting controlled production experiments with native speakers; 
- write a PhD thesis; 
- submit research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals; 
- present papers at (international) conferences; 
- teach a course in the second and third year of the appointment; 
- organise and participate in reading and discussions groups, seminars, workshops within LUCL.

Requirements:
The candidate should have: 
- a Master's degree in Linguistics, in particular in syntax and/or semantics (completion of the MA thesis before the PhD project starts); 
- a curious, enterprising and creative mind and excellent analytical skills, evidence of which should emerge from the MA thesis; 
- experience with PRAAT, and prosodic annotation (desirable); 
- a very good and demonstrable command of English; 
- ability to work both independently and as part of a team; 
- good writing skills; 
- knowledge of Irish, Flemish or a (South) Slavic language is considered a plus.

Terms and conditions:
We offer a fulltime, fixed-term post from 1 September 2015 until 31 August 2019. The appointment will initially be for 18 months and if evaluated positively, with an extension of 30 months and must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. Salary range, depending on education and work experience, from € 2.125,- to € 2.717,- gross per month (pay scale PhD students, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), based on a full-time appointment.

In addition to thorough research training, our graduate school offers a variety of courses aimed at training of professional and personal skills. In addition, advanced courses to deepen scientific knowledge are offered by the national research school (LOT).
