Abstract:

Modal particles (MPn) (e.g., "some," "simply," "yet," "yes,") are typically
found in large numbers throughout the German language. These are wholly
unobtrusive words that are often monosyllabic and unstressed. Nevertheless,
they are of significant importance in communication and are indispensable in
(spoken) language. This book investigates MPns from diverse linguistic
perspectives: what positions can MPns occupy in a sentence? Why can some types
of MPn not be used in certain types of sentences? Which MPns can be combined?
These questions form the central focus of this work in understanding the
meaning and functions of these words. On the basis of numerous (authentic)
examples, descriptive generalizations are established or examined and
theoretical analyses are presented and discussed. This book therefore offers
important information about the grammatical and interpretational properties of
MPns as well as information about research approaches and open questions
concerning this phenomenon. (Universitätsverlag Winter 2014)
