Focus: Are you fascinated by that uniquely human characteristic, our language? Understanding language requires taking a multidisciplinary and multi-level perspective, one that spans from molecule, through brain and mind, to language in a broader context. Radboud University has world-leading experts in all of these domains and is therefore particularly well-suited to teach you about all current methods in language science.

This course is organised by the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. You will be taught about state-of-the-art methods by scientists from many disciplines: genetics, neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, linguistics and anthropology. These scientists are all members of the Donders Institute or of its affiliated institutes, the Centre for Language Studies and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.

Description:
Lectures and reading materials will provide you with an overview of current methods in each discipline, with a focus on the latest research findings. Methods will be taught in the context of the theoretical issues that they address. In addition, group discussions will build bridges between the various disciplines, leading to novel multidisciplinary perspectives.

Whatever your prior level of training is, it is likely that you have expertise in only one (or a few) of the disciplines that make up language science. This course is therefore a great opportunity for you learn about how research is done in the other parts of your field.

While the focus is on research methods, the ultimate aim of this course is to help you advance your understanding of the field as a whole. For instance, how is language learned and processed, what is its nature, how did it evolve, what
are its neurobiological underpinnings, and how is it used in interactive communication?

By learning about methods across the domains of language science, you will not only gain knowledge about how to do research in this field, but also have a unique opportunity to think about how to integrate understanding across domains.
