Abstract:

Mass-medias and their related languages shape society and the world-view of
its citizens, and this is especially true for situations of socio-political
turmoil and their fashioning by the media. Based on the Romanian Revolution of
December, 1989, the function of the media in systems of control was revealed
and this revelation clarified how language and the media influenced democratic
processes, either through censorship or through freedom of the press. The
bloody collapse of Romanian socialism, its authenticity and the execution of
the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu remain controversial to this day. In terms of
mass-media, this work investigates the driving concepts within the discursive
complex, discursive principle, and inter-discursive relations and shows which
events in the media were placed with which linguistic resources to produce the
dominant narratives. Periodicals of the German minority within Romania as well
as Romanian periodicals and those published in the FDR are analyzed in this
work. (Universitätsverlag Winter 2014)
