Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics

Call Deadline: 30-Mar-2015

Meeting Description:

The conference will present the state of the art and original research focused on the use of oral and written interventions aiming, on the one hand, to promote narrative, language and socio-cognitive skills and, on the other, to better evaluate these same capacities. Contributions will concern typically developing children as well as children with language and communication disorders.

Several studies show that oral narrative skills predict language and early literacy, and are used often as an evaluation tool. The first part of the conference will deal with narrative activities and will discuss whether and how intervention procedures of different kinds can be used to promote and evaluate children’s narrative, language and socio-cognitive skills.

The evaluation of language through narratives is particularly interesting in language-impaired children. The second part of the conference will discuss how a detailed account of children’s pragmatic and socio-cognitive abilities can provide a better understanding of the complexity of language disorders. Moreover, contributions will emphasize that language-impaired children are not uniformly poor in all domains of language, but have specific strengths that are best revealed through oral or written interactions.

Call for Posters:

Poster submissions should concern studies that have used intervention procedures relating to narrative discourse with an aim to determine the effects of the procedures on the development or the assessment of language, literacy or cognitive skills. Studies on typically or atypically developing children are welcomed.

Deadline for submission: March 30, 2015
