Meeting Description:

We look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh for the 11th Annual Conference of the BAAL Language Learning and Teaching SIG. This is a mid-sized conference, attracting diverse participants, and retaining a friendly atmosphere. This year’s conference theme is “The Language of Language Learning”, and focuses on the increasing range of theoretical and methodological orientations to the theory-practice interface in second language learning and teaching. We are keen to attract researchers and practitioners in the fields of TESOL and Modern Foreign Languages. Our confirmed plenary speakers are: Professor Anna Mauranen (University of Helsinki), Professor Paul Meara (Cardiff University and University of Edinburgh), Professor Paul Seedhouse (Newcastle University), and Dr Naoko Taguchi (Carnegie Mellon University).

The conference fee (BAAL Members - £155, non-members - £180, students - £130) includes buffet lunches on both days, as well as morning and afternoon coffee, tea, soft drinks and pastries. The conference will be compact with all plenaries and breakout sessions held within Paterson’s Land at the Moray House School of Education.

Call for Papers:

The tasks of classroom teachers, language testers, materials developers, and second language learners are becoming increasingly complex as the range of research orientations in the field of second language learning and teaching continues to grow. While these multiple perspectives are enriching our understanding of the field, insights from research can leave language learners and teachers with difficult questions to answer, such as:

- How do we make effective use of L1 resources in learning or teaching an L2?
- How do we decide whose vocabulary/grammar/pragmatics/pronunciation we should be learning or teaching?
- How do we effectively adapt class content for learners in different age groups?
- How do we align situated and local second language needs with the demands of national and international standardized tests?

The aim of this conference is to offer an opportunity for fruitful and engaging discussion focusing on ‘the what’ and ‘the how’ of second language teaching in an age of increasing globalization. We are keen to attract presentation proposals from researchers and practitioners in the fields of TESOL and Modern Foreign Languages, which cover a wide range of perspectives and paradigms on second language learning and teaching, including:

- Corpus Linguistics and Learner Corpus Analysis
- Lingua Franca Perspectives
- The Role of the L1 in L2 Teaching
- Conversation Analysis
- Interlanguage Pragmatics
- Cognitive-Functional Orientations
- Formulaic Language
- Multilingualism
- Translanguaging
- Task-Based Language Teaching

Papers are invited for presentations of 20 minutes + 10 minutes for questions. Poster proposals are also welcome*. A title and 250 word (maximum) proposal should be sent by 9 March 2015 to: lltsig2015 at ed.ac.uk
