Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2015

Meeting Description:

Generative grammar has made important contributions to our understanding of language, and with it, the human mind. The field continues to be fecund and vibrant and new discoveries and developments continue apace. However, the rapid growth and development of this still-young field leaves it without a clear and uncontroversial canon, especially in syntax. There are few fundamental points that practitioners of the so-called minimalist approach have a clear consensus on. Because minimalist syntacticians generally cannot rely on a shared core of hypotheses and central principles, each paper has to build its case from the ground up, which results in publications steadily growing in size and presentations at conferences rarely generating the kind of excitement and fruitful discussion today that they used to more than a decade ago. It has become increasingly difficult to prove individual analyses, to prove them wrong, or to confront them in a meaningful way with counterarguments or supporting evidence.

This conference represents a ‘reconstitutional’ meeting of major minds in generative syntax aimed at producing a white paper to (re)affirm the theoretical core, work towards creating an analytical lingua franca, and lay down a platform for research in the field in the coming years.

In addition to plenary and group discussions, there will be a poster session, in which young and early-career-stage researchers will be encouraged to participate. A formal call for papers for this session will be distributed via Linguist List in due time.

Call for Posters:

Meeting Description:

Generative Syntax in the Twenty-First Century: The Road Ahead is a 3-day round-table taking stock of generative syntax and discussing the future of the field. It will take place in Athens, Greece, and feature discussions and a poster session.

The round-table conference aims to incite a high-level discussion of foundational issues with a group practical in size and with a reasonable number of shared background assumptions in hopes of producing a concrete result in the space of three days. The round-table's objectives are to catalogue and assess major assumptions and concepts that are shared by most transformational generative syntacticians today, and to identify major outstanding research questions concerning syntax and its interfaces.

In addition to plenary and group discussions, the conference features a poster session, in which in particular young and early-career-stage researchers are encouraged to participate.

Posters:

Abstracts are solicited for posters on any topic in generative-syntactic theory addressing the theoretical core (arguments for or against particular ingredients of current theory, (re-)evalua-tions of principles, parameters or widely made assumptions) with an eye towards strengthening coherence and consensus in the field and establishing a lingua franca for generative-syntactic re¬search. Submissions by young and early-career-stage researchers are especially encouraged.

Submissions should meet the following restrictions:

- Abstracts must not exceed two pages (A4 or letter size), including examples and references, set in a font no smaller than 11pt with single spacing.
- Abstracts must be anonymous.
- Abstracts should be submitted in PDF, via http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/roadahead/
- Submissions are restricted to one abstract per author (single- or co-authored)

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 31 January 2015.
