Description:

The Department of Languages and Literatures at University of Gothenburg, Sweden is offering 6 doctoral studentships:
Duration: Fixed-term employment, 4 years.
Extent: 100 %.
Location: Department of Languages and Literatures, Gothenburg.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies, in accordance with the applicable programme syllabi. This work includes the formulation and completion of a doctoral thesis as well as the completion of prescribed coursework as stipulated in the individual study plan. The successful applicants will participate continuously in the Department's research environment. The positions may also consist of up to 20% of departmental duties (such as teaching and administrative work). Doctoral students who perform such duties will have the duration of their doctoral studentships extended correspondingly. 

The doctoral studentships are offered in the following subject areas: African Languages, Arabic, English, Greek, Japanese, Latin, Romance Languages, Slavic Languages, Spanish, and German. 

Requirements:
Applications must clearly indicate the subject area of interest. As none of the doctoral studentships are reserved for a particular subject, all applicants compete with each other regardless of subject area. 
An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, has satisfied the requirements for coursework comprising at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. In order to be considered for a doctoral studentship, an applicant must meet both the general entry requirements for third-cycle education and the specific entry requirements according to the applicable programme syllabus. The applicant's qualifications in relation to the stated eligibility requirements must be clearly indicated in the application. The applicant is also assumed to have strong language skills in English and other languages that may be of relevance for the successful completion of the chosen project.

Assessment The national regulations for doctoral studentships can be found in Chapter 5 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100, Amendment 1998:80). 
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. 
The applicant must possess a good ability to benefit from third-cycle studies, meaning a strong ability to conduct research independently and under the guidance of a supervisor. The eligible applicants will be ranked based on their assessed ability to benefit from the programme. The following aspects will be given particular weight in the assessment of applicants: (i) the applicant's estimated ability to benefit from the programme, (ii) the quality of the applicant's thesis plan and previous theses, essays etc. submitted with the application and (iii) the availability of suitable supervisory competence.
