Call Deadline: 22-Feb-2015

Meeting Description:

The Zentrum für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) will be hosting a two-day Workshop on Aspect in Embedded Clauses, on May 11-12 in Berlin, Germany. The aim of the workshop is to explore the special behavior of aspect (broadly construed) in embedded contexts. The presentations at the workshop will investigate how embedding affects and constrains the marking of aspectual distinctions and the interpretation of aspectual categories, both relative to the matrix clause and in general.

We are pleased to be able to announce Anita Mittwoch (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and Susi Wurmbrand (University of Connecticut) as invited speakers for the workshop.

A great deal of work has been done on the special properties of embedded clauses with respect to tense -- e.g. on sequence-of-tense phenomena, double-access readings and the restricted marking and interpretation of tense in various types of non-finite clauses – but relatively little has been done specifically on how aspect interacts with clausal embedding. However, it is clear that patterns of interest, in part parallel to those exhibited by tense, are found here as well. E.g., just as tense marking and interpretation are restricted in non-finite clauses, at least some such clauses disallow marking of aspectual distinctions, and others place restrictions on the Aktionsart of their main predicate. Furthermore, in languages with rich aspectual systems, aspect marking in embedded clauses plays a crucial role in determining temporal and event-structural relationships between matrix and embedded eventualities.

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for presentations looking at any linguistic issues related to the marking or interpretation of aspect that are particularly related to embedded clauses. We welcome submissions on investigations at any grammatical level -- syntax, semantics, morphology and their interfaces -- both comparative work and in-depth considerations of phenomena in individual languages. We also intend a very inclusive definition of ''aspect'', including both ''inner'' aspect and ''outer'' aspect, as well as potentially intermediate phenomena.

Abstracts should be a maximum of two pages, in 12pt font with 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins on all four sides, the second page containing only examples and references. Authors should take care to ensure that the abstracts are completely anonymous, both in the text and the file metadata. Abstracts must be submitted online, at the following EasyChair page:

https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=waec2015

The deadline for abstract submissions is Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 23:59 Central European Time.
