Meeting Description:

The conference aims to tackle one of the most controversial and potentially
impactful debates in contemporary Europe. English is growing rapidly within,
and spreading across, an increasing number of societal domains. Such a
development is impelled by actions taken by national and supranational
decisions-makers, as well as global forces outside the control of any one
state or union. Europe’s founding principle of respecting and fostering
diversity and equality of cultures and language is being impinged by English’s
growing role across European countries, creating a de facto linguistic
hierarchy and consequently a potential cultural hierarchy. This conference
aims to uncover and stimulate debate on the current state of affairs in Europe
regarding English and the nurturing of multilingualism. By bringing together
academics and practitioners from multiple linguistic and cultural backgrounds,
it is envisaged that a current snapshot of English and multilingualism can be
presented in addition to an exploration of the challenges, opportunities and
controversies that such a situation brings with it.

Call for Papers:

We encourage researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and cultural perspectives to submit proposals for papers that speak to the current relationship between English and Multilingualism including, but not limited to, the following areas:

- Multilingualism, English and universities
- Global, national, regional and local language policy and planning
- The role of languages and 21st century economies
- Multilingualism: a European asset?
- Language usage in the EU of the 21st Century
- English & Intercultural teaching and learning 
- Handling identity and difference
- Globalization and trans-national mobility
- Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
- English as lingua franca
- English as medium of instruction

Please submit proposals for 20-minute papers (250 words) along with a 50-word biographical note to the conference organiser at Clive.Earls at nuim.ie by 25 February 2015. 

Please note that submission of a proposal does not guarantee its acceptance. Proposers will be informed by 12 March 2015 whether their proposal has been accepted.
