English Medium Instruction in Universities in Japan (tentative title)

Edited by:
- Annette Bradford (Meiji University)
- Howard Brown (The University of Niigata Prefecture)

Context:
English-medium instruction (EMI) is a growing phenomenon in Japanese
universities. As many as one third of universities offer some EMI, and
full-degree English-taught programs are now available at many Japanese
universities. Amid the internationalization of higher education in Japan, the
number of both international and domestic students studying at least part of
their degree in English is rising. This is seen across a range of institutions
from small private universities to large, prestigious national research-based
universities. While the larger issue of the internationalization of higher
education in Japan has recently been getting some attention in the literature,
less is known about the role that English is playing as a medium of
instruction. This book aims to fill that gap by painting a picture of EMI in
Japan, its development, its current situation and its future.

Target Audience:
This book is intended for a broad audience of EMI stakeholders in Japan
including teachers, researchers, university administrators, and policy makers.
The book will also be of value to EMI program stakeholders in other countries
seeking a comparative perspective. The book seeks to shed light on how and why
EMI is being implemented, the critical issues affecting that implementation
and the roles of government, universities, faculty and students.

Outline of the Book:
We are accepting proposals for main book chapters (5,000 to 7,000 words,
excluding references) in the following areas:
- the context and current situation of EMI in Japan
- issues with EMI faculty
- issues with EMI students
- the relationship between EMI and language teaching & learning
- EMI as part of the internationalization of higher education
- the social & political implications of EMI
- EMI program outcomes
- government policy concerning EMI
- the future of EMI
- towards a possible research agenda for EMI in Japan

We are also accepting proposals for shorter chapters (3,000 to 5,000 words,
excluding references) for a section of the book tentatively titled Curriculum
Contexts. These chapters would be descriptive case studies of how EMI is being
implemented on campuses around Japan. Chapters in this section should include,
but are not limited to, the flowing topics:
- the institutional context
- rationales for and drivers of the EMI program
- a description of how the EMI program was originally developed and how it has
evolved / developed over time
- the program structure
- critical issues the program faced or is facing
- a vision of the future of the program

Notes for Submission:
Proposals should not exceed one A4 page. Be sure to include your name and
contact information. If a chapter is being co-authored, please indicate who
should be considered the lead / contact author. Please send your proposal as a
Microsoft word file attachment to emisubmissions at gmail.com. Please name your
file with your own family name (for example Brown_EMI_Chapter.docx).

Important Dates:
Submission of Abstracts: March 7, 2015
Notification of Acceptance: April 20, 2015
Submission of Full Chapter: October 31, 2015
Review Results Returned: January 30, 2016
