Modern sociolinguistic research on the Celtic languages represents a diverse constellation of research agendas that complement earlier pioneering dialectological studies. These modern approaches diversify the field of Celtic sociolinguistics and enhance our understanding of the current dynamics of the Celtic languages in their social environments by deconstructing the nexus between the individual, the linguistic, the social, and the cultural. Such research plays a vital role in elucidating the nature of both language and society in late modernity where social arrangements and linguistic practices are increasingly fluid and changeable.

The aim of this symposium is to provide an opportunity for postgraduate research students and early career researchers to present their work and to bring these researchers together with established academics working on the sociolinguistics of the Celtic languages. The meeting will feature scholars who approach research on the Celtic languages from varying theoretical perspectives and who adopt diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. It will therefore provide an insight into current approaches to Celtic language sociolinguistics and will allow for constructive discussions on possible future directions in the field as society adapts to changing social and linguistic circumstances.

Call for Papers:

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: February 15, 2015

Papers on the following topics will be considered:

Language Acquisition; Language and Identity; Language Attitudes and Ideologies; Language in Education; Language in the Media; (Family) Language Policy; Language Standardisation; Linguistic Variation and Change; Social Meaning in Linguistic Variation.

Focus: Modern sociolinguistic and linguistic anthropology research on the Celtic languages (Irish, Welsh, Breton, Scottish Gaelic).

Contributions in the form of posters or individual 20 minute papers are invited for this three day symposium. Places are limited.

Abstracts of no more than 400 words should be sent to celticsociolinguistics at ucd.ie no later than February 15, 2015. Abstracts will be double-blind reviewed and notification of acceptance will be indicated by March 15, 2015. Housing will be available on Campus and a small registration fee will be charged to cover coffee breaks, lunch and a reception.
