Focus: The Metaphor Lab Amsterdam Summer School focuses on the theoretical motivation and practical application of a specific and concrete technique for metaphor identification and analysis.

Minimum Education Level: PhD

Description:
After two successful rounds in one cycle of winter and summer schools in 2012 and 2013 with over 30 participants from all over Europe and some countries outside Europe, the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam is delighted to announce the beginning of a new cycle of schools for a new cohort of PhD students and recent post doc researchers interested in training by experts in the field in various methods of metaphor identification and analysis.

The school will be held from Sunday evening, 14 June, through Friday evening, 19 June, and is deliberately piggy-backed on to the RaAM (Association for Researching and Applying Metaphor) Special Seminar on metaphor in Leiden from 10 through 12 June, so that participants may be able to combine the two events in one trip.

The school will comprise three courses, each course lasting from Monday, 15 June, through Friday, 19 June, on the following topics:

09.30 – 11.45
Identifying and Analysing Visual Metaphor—Introducing VisMIP
Instructor: Dr Marianna Bolognesi, Marie Curie Fellow, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

Lunch, offered by Metaphor Lab Amsterdam

13.00 – 15.15
Analysing Metaphor in Discourse—Introducing the 5-step method
Instructor: Professor Gerard Steen, NWO Vici laureate, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

Tea, offered by Metaphor Lab Amsterdam

15.45 – 18.00
Identifying Metaphor in Language—Introducing MIPVU
Instructor: Dr Susan Nacey, author of "Metaphors in Learner English", Hedmark University College, Norway

Each of the courses will focus on the theoretical motivation and practical application of a specific and concrete technique for metaphor identification and analysis. The courses are introductory: it is our intention to organize a second school in one year from now in order to continue work with the same
group of participants at a more advanced level, as we did in the first cycle two years ago.

All courses will take place in one building in the center of Amsterdam, right behind Dam Square: P C Hoofthuis, Spuistraat 134, home of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at metaphorlabamsterdam at gmail.com. This is also where you should send your application, again, by 9 February, 9 AM CET.

We look forward to hearing from many of you.
