Description:

Career Opportunities in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanyang Technological
University in Singapore offers a stimulating and multidisciplinary education
and research in the humanities and social sciences, and is home to nine major
disciplines for undergraduate and postgraduate (Chinese, English Literature,
Economics, Linguistics and Multilingual Studies, Philosophy, Psychology,
Sociology, History, and Public Policy and Global Affairs). To further
strengthen teaching and research capacities, the School is recruiting a number
of new faculty members in the following areas, to start in August 2015 or
earlier.

Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies

The Division has a strength of fifteen full-time faculty members, several
part-time lecturers and tutors, four postdoctoral fellows, and about ten Ph.D.
students. Although only seven years old, the Division of Linguistics and
Multilingual Studies has been making rapid progress in all aspects of its
work, including the development of programmes of study and new areas of
research. The Division is ranked 42 in the QS World Rankings by Subject. For
more information about the School and the Division, please visit the following
website: http://linguistics.hss.ntu.edu.sg/Pages/default.aspx

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Experimental Phonetics

The Division invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as
Assistant Professor in the Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies,
with specialization in Experimental Phonetics (of the type that involves not
just taking measurements, etc., but also using the findings to explain
phenomena related to speech perception and possibly sound change, or applying
it to, for example automated speech recognition and production).

Aside from teaching and research in the area of specialization, the person
hired will be responsible for the Division’s Phonetics Lab, which provides
service to the whole School of HSS. There has also been ongoing collaboration
with scholars in Engineering on automated speech recognition and speech
production. In Singapore this area of research is recognized as being of vital
importance to Singapore’s social and economic success, and so Speech and
Language Technologies has been identified as one of four innovation cluster
areas shortlisted for funding by the Research, Innovation and Enterprise
Council (RIEC), chaired by the Prime Minister.

Candidates should have a Ph.D., and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in
research as well as teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:

- Experience supervising postgraduate students;
- Ability to work in a multilingual setting;
- Experience in cross-linguistic studies;
