Abstract:

The Bavarian linguistic atlas, in which a multitude of dialects from across Bavaria are recorded, is a joint project from five Bavarian universities, whose research results are published in six geographical sub-projects. Although the data is collected independently for each individual region, the comparability of the various subprojects is assured by the coordination of interviews using uniform methods and largely matching questionnaires. 

The atlas provides a representative selection of the various sounds and forms as well as the vocabulary of the dialects of each region. Unlike in a dictionary, the regional spread of different linguistic phenomena is visually displayed using precise maps. As a result the atlas provides more information than would a simple a dictionary of dialects. It is an archive of endangered dialects and a reference work for all those interested in the language, history and culture of Bavaria. (Universitätsverlag Winter 2014)
