Abstract:

Tera is an endangered Chadic Language spoken in the north and eastern parts of Gombe and Borno States in Nigeria. The dictionary is based on real data collected from native speakers from different villages in the two states where the language is predominantly spoken and it contains alternative forms used by speakers from the entire Tera domain. It is co-authored by a native speaker of the language who has a good command of the language and who speaks the language fluently.

The Modern Tera-English-Hausa Dictionary is the very first dictionary of its kind on the language. It goes beyond the existing glossaries of the language. In addition, to giving English and Hausa translations, an equivalent of several entries provides the user with explanations, examples showing the context in which words are used, as well as grammatical information of the lexical items.

Mohammed Aminu Mu’azu is professor of Linguistics in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, University of Maiduguri-Nigeria. Maimuna Adamu Magaji is a Graduate of English and Linguistics, University of Maiduguri-Nigeria.
