Subject: Obituary: Charles E. Townsend

Charles E. Townsend died peacefully at his home on June 7, 2015 surrounded by
his family members.

Townsend was a legendary figure in Slavic linguistics and the author of many
influential books and articles on a wide range of topics, with special focus
on Russian morphology, spoken Prague Czech, and comparative analysis of Slavic
languages. After studying with and then teaching alongside Roman Jakobson at
Harvard in the early sixties, Townsend joined the faculty at Princeton
University in 1966, where he served as chair of the Department of Slavic
Languages and Literatures for over thirty years.

Townsend was an indefatigable mentor committed to bringing up new generations
of scholars and is fondly remembered by his colleagues and former students,
who presented him with a festschrift in 2002. An In Memoriam tribute will be
published in the summer-fall issue of the Journal of Slavic Linguistics.
