Meeting Description:

Portuguese involvement in the description of South Asian languages dates back to the late 15th century, when a short Malayalam vocabulary was appended to the logbook of Vasco da Gama’s first voyage to India. The ensuing production of grammars, dictionaries and translations turned Lisbon into one of the first European centres for the diffusion of linguistic knowledge about South Asia and, as a result, some of the earliest grammars of South Asian languages (such as Tamil, Konkani, Sinhala, or Bangla) produced by Europeans are nowadays preserved in Portuguese libraries and archives. 

In view of this tradition, the Centre for Linguistics of the University of Lisbon is happy to host the 32nd edition of the South Asian Languages Analysis Roundtable (SALA-32) between April 27 and 29, 2016.

SALA began in 1978 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and has since then become established as one of the principal fora for the scholarly discussion of South Asian linguistics. Traditionally, SALA has been receptive to any descriptive, theoretical, or applied linguistic research concerning the languages of South Asia; the 32nd edition is expected to be equally broad-ranging in terms of the topics and languages represented.

Call for Papers:

We invite submission of abstracts for SALA-32.

The 32nd edition of the South Asian Languages Analysis Roundtable (SALA-32) will take place at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, on April 27-29, 2016. We invite submission of abstracts for individual papers before September 20, 2015.

Any descriptive, theoretical, or applied linguistic research concerning one or more of the languages of South Asia – broadly defined – is welcome.

Considering the location of this meeting, we encourage the submission of abstracts concerning the linguistic effects of the centuries-old interaction between South Asian languages and Portuguese. Further possible topics include but are not limited to the following: 

- Descriptive studies of any aspect of a South Asian language or languages
- Comparative and typological studies
- Cognitive and psycholinguistic studies
- Language contact
- Pragmatics and discourse analysis
- Sociolinguistics
- Historical linguistics and language change
- Philology
- Translation studies
- Computational linguistics
- Corpus and quantitative linguistic studies
- Language endangerment, preservation and documentation
- Language learning, acquisition, and teaching
- Language policies

Paper presentations will consist of a 20 minute talk followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Paper abstracts should be no longer than 800 words, excluding reference list.

We encourage submission of abstracts from early-career researchers, including postgraduate research students and postdoctoral researchers.
