Description:

The Centre de Lingüística Teòrica (CLT) announces one PhD position linked to the research project FFI2014-56968-C4-2-P, La variación en la interfaz sintaxis-discurso, (PIs: Ángel J. Gallego and M. Lluïsa Hernanz). The successful applicant will carry out research, resulting in a PhD dissertation, following the research lines of the project.

What we are looking for:

Applicants with interest in syntactic theory. The research lines of the project are (i) the syntax-discourse interface and/or (ii) the left periphery.

What we offer:

The selected candidate will join our research group, the Centre de Lingüística Teòrica. The Center for Theoretical Linguistics (Centre de Lingüística Teòrica—CLT ) is a research group which was founded at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in the early 1980s. The focus of research at the CLT is grammatical theory in a broad sense of the term, and the linguists who make up our group come from experimental and theoretical research backgrounds in diverse fields including phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, and semantics. The goal of the CLT is to contribute to a fuller understanding of how natural languages are structured and how they are processed by human beings. Our research activity basically revolves around the study of the universal properties of language and the identification of patterns of microvariation among natural languages.

Conditions:

The position has a duration of 4 years starting on the academic year 2015-2016. The position requires residence near Barcelona, 37.5 hours/week research, and must result in a PhD dissertation at the end of the scholarship. Gross salary is € 16.422 per year. There is an additional stipend of € 4.750 for research stays in other centers. If the candidate obtains the PhD at the beginning of the last year of the scholarship, he/she can be hired as postdoctorate researcher for the rest of that year, with an stipend of € 19.000 (gross salary) per year.

Requirements:

An MA degree in Linguistics is required. Excellent record in the undergraduate and Master's degrees and affinity with the research lines outlined above is also expected. Knowledge of Catalan and Spanish is also required. Candidates will enroll at the Cognitive Science and Language PhD Program at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
