Meeting Description:

The fifth biennial conference on Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology (CASPSLaP 2016) will be held at The Ohio State University in Columbus on April 15-17, 2016. CASPSLaP brings together leading experts in the field of the second language acquisition (SLA) of Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation. The presentations will include a wide range of topics, from the acquisition of Spanish phonology by English speakers, to the acquisition of Portuguese phonology by Spanish speakers; from classroom-based learning to full immersion in the second-language culture; among various other topics. By focusing on the breadth of approaches currently taken by scholars researching the acquisition of Spanish and Portuguese L2 phonology, this conference aims to present the state-of-the-art in second language phonological acquisition.

In addition to the general session, the conference will feature two special sessions on the L2 acquisition of prosody and the phonology of heritage speakers, both with invited discussants. There will also be a poster session, as well as an interactive, pedagogy-focused session called Ignite that addresses best practices in classroom pronunciation instruction. CASPSLAP 2016 will be held in concert with the OSU Congress on Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics (OSUCHiLL).

CASPSLaP 2016

Submitting Abstracts for Oral Presentations and Posters:

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute oral presentations and posters on any topic related to the second language acquisition of the Spanish and Portuguese sound systems, as well as oral presentations for two special sessions. (See below for special instructions regarding submissions for Ignite, a pedagogy-focused workshop).

Special Sessions:

Anonymous, one-page abstracts for oral presentations and posters, with a second page allowed for references and/or examples, should be submitted through
http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/caspslap2016 by 11:59 PM EST on November 1, 2015. Abstracts may be submitted as Word or PDF documents. Please embed any special fonts. Each author may submit at most one abstract as sole author and one jointly-authored abstract (or, alternatively, two jointly-authored abstracts). Submissions for the pedagogy-focused workshop will not count against this total. For questions, contact the conference organizers at caspslap2016 at gmail.com.

Submitting Abstracts for Ignite:

Ignite CASPSLaP 2016: Best Practices in Classroom Pronunciation Instruction

We solicit submissions for an interactive pedagogy-focused session during which participants will present brief (10-minute) micro-teaching lessons. These lessons should showcase a specific pedagogical technique or activity to teach a particular sound or process, or to help learners overcome a particular difficulty. Such lessons may be aimed at learners enrolled in courses specifically treating pronunciation/phonetics or for learners in more general language course.

The Ignite session will begin with a brief introduction to the topic by the organizers, followed by one hour of various speed presentations. Upon the conclusion of the micro- teaching lessons, attendees will have time to converse with presenters and other attendees before the organizers conclude the session. We also plan to post all of the materials on a website.

Submissions should include a detailed lesson plan with a title, statement of objectives, summary of steps or tasks, the developed activity/activities itself/themselves, and suggested follow-ups (for example, other activities, homework assignments, and/or assessments), plus any references. Submit materials through http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/caspslap2016 by 11:59 PM EST on November 1, 2015. For questions, contact the conference organizers at caspslap2016 at gmail.com.
