Description:

Expressions of interest are invited from students interested in pursuing doctoral research on the phonetics and phonology of liquid consonants. Students will be free to pursue their own research interests on any topic which addresses the phonology of liquids in Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, Arabic, and Australian English. In addition, students will collaborate with Dr. Michael Proctor and Assoc. Prof. Felicity Cox on an experimental program designed to examine production and perception of liquids in more detail, and to explore theoretical issues in liquid phonology and syllable structure. We will use Electromagnetic Articulography and real-time MRI to examine new aspects of liquid articulation, and computational phonological modelling software to explore hypotheses about the representation of liquid consonants.

Applicants should have a strong background in phonetics, speech science, phonological theory, computational or general linguistics. Applicants must show initiative in research and skill development. Good computing, writing and statistical skills are required. Experience with phonetic experimentation - especially EMA - will be highly regarded, and Matlab skills would be an advantage.

Application Deadline: 31-Aug-2015
