Meeting Description:

Interculturality: Applied and Critical Perspectives - International Epic Conference
October 16-17 2015 - KU Leuven, Campus Antwerpen

The 2015 International Conference on Interculturality will be held in Antwerp, Belgium from 16-17 October 2015. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the EPIC 2015 Conference Proceedings. Contributions can be made in French and English, and will have to be presented within 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions and exchanges. In order to send a proposition, you will need to send an abstract of 200-300 words, the title of your presentation, your name and affiliation before 25 July 2015. Acceptations will be notified by 31 August, and the programme will be sent out shortly afterwards.

Why Interculturality?

The concept of interculturality has been largely used for the past thirty years in scientific literature (anthropology, management, sociology, psychology, education, etc) but its presence per se has hardly been critically questioned. Interculturality gathers different notions, approaches and communicative skills, and its core probably draws on interactions between speakers/interactants who do not necessarily share the same linguistic and/or cultural codes. Other approaches hint towards transculturality, cross-culturality, intraculturality, multiculturalism or pluriculturalism, but ultimately share the same goal: trying to understand what happens when interactions fail, especially when communicative codes are so different that misunderstandings might occur too often.

In many ways, works on interculturality may remain trapped in wishful thinking. However, scholars have been working on critical, applied or soft versions of interculturality, by focusing on diversity and commonalities, rather than dwelling on differences and the incommensurable ontologies of human societies (Greenfeld 2000, Halter 2000, Wikan 2002, Anderson 2006, Lawson 2006, Lindholm 2008, Benhabib 2009, Breidenbach & Nyiri 2009, Phillips 2009, Gilbert 2010, Piller 2011, Dervin 2011, Holliday 2011, Keating 2013). Especially in Europe, where a crisis of national identity and rising right-wing parties seem to question the very basis of the management of diversity in democratic regimes, the questions raised by intercultural debates remain crucial if we wish to improve education to otherness, as well as social and economic exchanges between citizens. In this very perspective, exchanges between students, teachers and scholars within common projects may contribute to these questions, in o
rder to foster mutual comprehension and respectful recognition.

Call for Papers:

This call for papers is directed towards colleagues and scholars who are active in the field of interculturality, in terms of education, teaching, research and construction of curricula. The aim of the present conference will be to exchange ideas, theories, applied research projects and teaching experiments.

Contributions from different (sub-)disciplines are welcomed: (critical) discourse analysis, translation and interpretation studies, terminology, education, political sciences, social sciences etc.

This conference will also be the occasion to present the EPIC (European Programme in Intercultural Communication) Master Programme and to welcome new members, in order to build a European network of MA Programme dedicated to interculturality in a large sense. The EPIC Master Programme has started in September 2014, thanks to a strong and faithful partnership between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven, Campus Antwerpen, Belgium) and the Université Catholique de l’Ouest (UCO, Angers, France).
