Pre-conference Workshop: Communicating Science in Translation. Challenges of Scientific Translation in 21 Century

The Sixth International Conference Maastricht – Łódź Duo Colloquium Translation and Meaning 

Topics of the Workshop:

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers working at the cutting edge of this field, to hear about the latest advances and to discuss issues of methodology and of theory. We expect papers focusing on these themes:

- Directionality in translating scientific texts (translating from and into major languages, such as English)
- The role of generic integrity, generic competence and professional expertise
- Levels of communicating science (expert to expert, expert to non-expert, etc.)
- Scientific genres and document design
- Clarity vs. opacity in translated scientific prose 
- Translating specialized terminology
- Terminographic resources and terminology management
- CAT and localization
- The place and role of corpora (parallel, comparable and multilingual language resources)
- Conference interpreting 
- The list is not exhaustive and other topics are also welcome!

Format of the Workshop:

The workshop will consist of three 90-minute sessions, plus a round table discussion. Each session will comprise three or four papers, giving a total of about 10 papers.

Call for Papers:

If you wish to take part in the workshop, please send an abstract of no more than 300 words to Stanisław Goźdź-Roszkowski  roszkowski at uni.lodz.pl or gozdz.roszkowski at gmail.com , using the following format: 

- Page 1: Your name, contact details, and the title of the abstract.
- Page 2: The title of the abstract and the abstract itself

Important Dates and Notes:

Deadline for the submission of abstracts: 15 June 2015
You will hear back from us by: 30 June 2015

In line with the policy of the conference organisers, you are welcome to submit abstracts both for this workshop and for the main Translation and Meaning conference. However, if you give two papers they should be different, without substantial overlap.

Workshop Fee:

There is no fee for registered participants of the main conference. If you wish to attend only the workshop, then the fee is 100 PLN or 25 EUR payable to the main conference account.
