Meeting Description:

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies (M. Triandaphyllidis Foundation), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is pleased to announce the “1st International Conference on Greek Etymology (Ancient, Medieval and Modern)”, to be held on 5-6 November 2015, at the Municipal Library of Thessaloniki.

The conference aims to examine issues related to the etymology of the Greek language, covering all historical periods and aspects, whether dialectal or not. It is organized, among others, around the following thematic areas:

(a) Theoretical aspects of Greek etymology
(b) Etymological suggestions regarding Ancient, Medieval and Modern Greek words
(c) Etymology and dialectology
(d) Etymology and language contact
(e) Etymology and philology (text reconstruction, pre-scientific etymology)
(f) Etymology and education

The following distinguished guests have confirmed their participation: 

Professor Françoise Bader (École Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Université Sorbonne IV, Paris)
Professor Charles de Lamberterie (École Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Université Sorbonne IV, Paris)

In the context of the conference we are hosting a special session, in which leading experts will present issues and concerns raised in the process of compiling etymological dictionaries of specific Balkan languages, with a focus on Greek etymology issues.

Participants in this session include: 

Professor A. Loma (Serbian Language Institute of SASA, University of Belgrade),
Professor M. Sala (Romanian Academy)

Call for Papers:

Abstract Submission:

Those who wish to participate in the conference are invited to submit two copies (MS Word and pdf) of their abstracts as attachments to greek-etymology at phil.auth.gr by 25 May 2015. Notification of acceptance will be communicated by 15 June 2015.

Margins: 3 cm all sides

Participation Fees:

Standard Fee: 30 €
Student Fee: 10 €

Participation fees are to be paid on the day of registration.
