Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Meeting Description:

Topic:

While the connection between music and language has been the object of speculations of
all sorts for quite a few centuries, it has recently become the object of detailed scientific
investigations, both formal and experimental (see for instance Patel's relatively recent
survey of some relevant results). In particular, Lerdahl and Jackendoff's Generative Theory
of Tonal Music as well as Lerdahl's more recent work gave a subtle and articulated
assessment of which modules are shared between language and music, and which are
not. This workshop, hosted by the NYU Linguistics Department, seeks to foster interaction
among researchers with an interest in this question in the New York area.
