Description:

3-year PhD Scholarship Opportunities

The LIRMM, at Université de Montpellier (UM) in France, offers several 3-year PhD scholarships in Computing starting September 2015. The topics on offer are prioritised. Among the top-priority ones is the following NLP topic, supervised by Jean-Philippe Prost and Christian Retoré: Modelling Semantic Preferences for Interpreting Ambiguous Utterances

The topic is concerned with the introduction of preferences in the semantic modelling of natural language, following the lead of similar works in syntax. The focus will be put on syntax and semantics (lexical and compositional) of deteriorated or underspecified utterances. This topic should open avenues of research in language cognition with the modelling confronting experiments, among others.

Warning! Deadlines are quite short: applications must be submitted by 29 May 2015 on the UM's website:

PhD offers: http://www.edi2s.univ-montp2.fr/

Please note that prior to submitting, the candidates are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the supervisors as soon as possible (prost at lirmm.fr and retore at lirmm.fr), in order to discuss their background, their academic results and their motivation with respect to the topic on offer, and more generally with the field of Computational Linguistics.

Interviews of pre-selected candidates (max. 2) by a panel of academics (not inclusive of the supervisors) will occur on the 3, 4, and 5 June 2015.
