Focus: This course is addressed to teachers, professionals, academics and researchers who wish to improve their research and communication skills in English. Communicative and publishing conventions and norms differ in Romance and Anglo-Germanic languages. This course aims at complementing the participants’ previous knowledge in their mother tongue with skills to improve their oral and written fluency in English.

Contents: 

1. Communicating research in English

2. Information literacy for academics in the Social Sciences and Humanities 

Part 1 will focus on communicating research findings in English, both in oral and in written form. This part will include preparing conference abstracts and presentations (including PowerPoint slides), public speaking, dealing with questions, as well as discussing standard norms of academic writing in English, preparing manuscripts, and getting published.

Part 2 will focus on how to support one's research and the communication of one’s research results using electronic tools and resources, such as key web resources, web search strategies, mind-mapping software, advanced Word features as well as file and folder management.

Objectives:

To build participants’ confidence in their researching and communication skills in English and enable them to increase their English-language outputs.

Methodology:

A combination of lectures and hands-on practice sessions. Participants will be encouraged to work on a concrete piece of their own research (e.g. a conference paper) throughout the course.

Assessment: 

Certificate of Attendance: 80% attendance
Minimum Education Level: BA

Special Qualifications:
Language: Upper Intermediate English: B2 (FCE), TOEFL 543, or equivalent

- From idea to presentation: Preparing your manuscript and PowerPoint presentation
- Standard components of academic articles
- PowerPoint best practice: Dos and don'ts
- Exercises: Connectors, references, modifiers
- Shared questions and doubts from needs analysis
- One-to-one tutoring
- Task for Wednesday

- Filling the gaps -- Researching in international databases 
- Strong points, typical problems (and solutions)
- Revising and optimizing your manuscripts
