Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2016

Meeting Description:

The label “Digital Humanities”, especially in the case of linguistic and philological sciences, indicates a number of different approaches, that range from the digital publication of materials to the development of advanced strategies of formal representation aiming at investigating specific features of texts and languages that were previously studied using a standard, pre-computational approach.

The workshop “Formal Representation & Digital Humanities: text, language and tools”, organized within the framework of the MSCA project “SLUW: A Computer-Aided Study of the (Morpho-)Syntax of the Luwian Language”, to be held at the University of Verona (Italy) on June 28-29, 2016, aims at promoting the communication between specialists of all aspects of digital and computational philology and linguistics.

Call for Papersd:

We welcome contributions on all aspects of digital and computational philology and linguistics, including:

Formal representation, models and tools for the assessment of language features:
- phonology and phonetic change
- morphology and morphological change
- syntax and syntactic change
- semantics and semantic change
- typology
- genealogical trees

Semantic and syntactic annotation

Digital representation of philological features
- reconstruction
- variants alignment
- commentaries and annotation

Online lexica and collections

Presentation of prospective tools and digital initiatives (e.g. software and interface)

Papers will be 20 minute long, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts can be submitted until January 31, 2016, and notifications of acceptance will be sent on Monday, February 29, 2016.

Important dates:

- 28-29/06/2016: Conference dates

Submission:
Please submit title and abstract to the email address federico.giusfredi at univr.it

The computational and digital approach to the study of philology and linguistics represents, at the same time, an opportunity and a challenge. An opportunity, because the possibility to use computer-aided assessments of texts and languages has simplified the task of analysing and publishing extensive sets of data. A challenge, because the heuristic and epistemologic process needs to be adapted to the new tools, and in order to do that the researchers from the different scientific areas need to be able to effectively communicate with each other.
