Description:

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara, announces a search to fill a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Hispanic or Portuguese linguistics at the Assistant Professor level, with a starting date of July 1, 2016. Duties include teaching and advising at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and maintaining an active research program. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in linguistics, Iberian linguistics or a related field by the starting date, they should have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English, or Portuguese, Spanish and English. Evidence of outstanding research (or research potential) and teaching ability at the undergraduate and graduate levels are essential.

The Department offers a doctoral emphasis in Hispanic/Iberian Linguistics, focusing on topics in Spanish, Portuguese, their non-European varieties, and other topics related to regional languages. We particularly value research that integrates insights from different subfields of linguistics and from other disciplines, bringing a variety of types of empirical evidence to bear on the development of theories of language and language use. The Department gives priority to the overall originality and promise of the candidate's research rather than the area of specialization within linguistics. However, given the close collaboration with linguists from UCSB's Linguistics Department, and our participation in cross-departmental Ph.D. Emphasis in Applied Linguistics (http://www.appliedlinguistics.ucsb.edu/) we are looking for candidates to complement, rather than duplicate, existing expertise in either Department. An interest in Basque or Translation Studies is also a plus.

Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. To ensure full consideration, all application materials, including letters of reference, should be uploaded by December 7th, 2015 onto the UCSB Academic Job Board at the application website below. We require a letter of application, statement of research interests, curriculum vitae, and two writing samples. Applicants should request three academic letters of reference to be uploaded onto the Academic Job Board (below). Inquiries may be addressed to the search committee at splingsearch2015 at gmail.com. Interviews will be conducted via Skype and at the Linguistics Society of America annual meeting (January 7-10, 2016) in Washington, D.C.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
