Linguistic Field(s): Translation

Call Deadline: 30-Nov-2015

Meeting Description:

The Centre for Translation & Interpreting Studies in Scotland (CTISS) is honoured to be hosting the 8th Critical Link International Conference. The conference will bring together all community/public service interpreting and translation stakeholders: community and public sector representatives, employers, developers of tools and technologies, policy makers, practitioners, professional bodies, researchers, service users, trainers and educators, TICS (translation, interpreting & communication support) service providers, and other interested parties to build on progress made to date in order to move forward.

The overarching theme of the conference is Critical LinkS – a new generation. The aim is to explore future-proofing community/public service Interpreting and translating: to investigate working together across professional, geographic, user-group and language communities (spoken and signed), through technology, and coping with current and emerging constraints (e.g. economic, environmental, geographic, legal, linguistic, social...). The conference will explore policy, practice, pedagogy, price, plus innovation in the field.

The Critical Link International Conference series will celebrate its coming of age in Edinburgh, as the first conference took place 21 years earlier, in Canada, in June 1995. Held every three years, this highly esteemed event creates a global platform for TICS practitioners, user groups, public sector professionals, decision makers, academics and researchers. Providing a forum for the exchange of information, knowledge and skills, it offers unparalleled opportunities for networking for people from around the world.

The first conference examined challenges facing interpreting in the social, legal and healthcare sectors and began the process of identifying responses to those challenges. Navigating today's landscape of extraordinary globalisation, migration, austerity and technological advances, Critical Link 8 will continue this journey.

The event will take place at Heriot-Watt University's Edinburgh Campus. Edinburgh, capital city of Scotland and the world's festival capital, offers a wealth of experiences for visitors to explore from architecture to zoology, as well as offering easy access to other Scottish cities, tourist destinations and scenic landscapes.

Pre-conference workshops and demonstrations will also be scheduled on 27-28 June 2016. In addition, the Edinburgh Interpreting Research Summer School (EIRSS) will take place at Heriot-Watt just after the conference, 4-8 July 2016.

In 2005, the Centre for Translation & Interpreting Studies (CTISS), housed in the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies (LINCS) established almost fifty years ago, ran the first PSIT Conference, Breaking Down Barriers - A Team Effort. This was the first international conference on public service interpreting & translating held in Scotland. People still talk about their memories of that conference and, not least, the ceilidh!

In 2016, CTISS hopes to welcome people from every country in the world to participate in Critical Link 8.

Call for Papers:

The deadline for the second call is 30 November 2015, Scotland's St Andrew's Day. The Critical Link 8 conference organising committee will look forward to celebrating with abstracts and proposals received from those interested in community/public service interpreting and translating, from all possible perspectives.

Pre-conference workshops and events will also take place before the conference (27-28 June) and the Edinburgh International Research Summer School (EIRSS) is scheduled to take place 4-8 July 2016.
