Focus: The traditional linguistic research asks what the meaning of linguistic expressions is. Newer approaches, however, draw attention to the question of how the meaning of natural language arises. The DGfS Summer School "Mapping Meaning: Theory – Cognition – Variation" would like to follow this new perspective by focusing on the dynamics and adaptivity of linguistic meaning. Taking up these key issues of the Collaborative Research Center 833 in Tübingen, the summer school aims at providing an inspiring forum for discussing the meaning constitution of natural language from theoretically and methodologically different points of view.

The Summer School is co-organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS), the Collaborative Research Center 833 (SFB 833), the Research Training Group 1808 (GRK 1808) and the Forum Scientiarum in Tübingen.
Minimum Education Level: BA

Special Qualifications:
The Summer School is suitable for advanced students (Ph.D. or M.A.
level, advanced B.A. students).

Description:
Renowned researchers from Germany, Europe and the United States will offer a total of 18 courses. The language of instruction will be English. The courses are assigned to three thematic areas – Theory, Cognition, and Variation.

The courses in the thematic area Theory (A1-A6) focus on the formal modeling of natural language meaning and its theoretical foundations. The following courses will be offered:

A1 (Gottfried Vosgerau) The metaphysics of meaning 
A2 (Nicholas Asher) Formal and distributional lexical semantics
A3 (Sebastian Löbner) Frame theory and semantics
A4 (Daniel Altshuler) Temporal interpretation of narrative discourse: Exploring the interaction between prominence and coherence
A5 (Katharina Hartmann) Information structure: Intonation and meaning
A6 (Jana Bressem & Ellen Fricke) Gesture, grammar and cognition: a multimodal approach to language use

The courses in the thematic area Cognition (B1-B6) focus on the acquisition and the processing of natural language meaning. The following courses will be offered:

B1 (Petra Schulz) Acquisition of semantics
B2 (Berry Claus) Concepts and word meanings: Representational and processing issues 
B3 (Michael Wagner) Prosody and incremental processing 
B4 (Lyn Frazier) Processing at the syntax-discourse interface 
B5 (Oliver Bott) Psycholinguistic work on coercion: Resolving compositional conflicts during online comprehension 
B6 (Barbara Dancygier) Cognitive poetics: Exploring literary nuts and bolts through linguistic analysis

The topic of the courses in the area Variation (C1-C6) is the wealth of variation of natural language meaning, as it arises based on diverse historical, language-specific, social, and medial conditions. The following courses will be offered:

C1 (Remus Gergel) Anything goes in semantic change? Using data, compositionality and the interfaces towards a restrictive theory 
C2 (Thomas Jügel) Perfect mapping: Typological similarities and variations of the perfect across languages 
C3 (Gemma Barberà) The meaning of space in sign language: Conveying reference in a different language modality 
C4 (Sally McConnell-Ginet) Meaning, society, and power 
C5 (Cedric Boeckx) The descent of meaning: Primate semantics, with Modification 
C6 (Christina Unger) Computational approaches to meaning
