Meeting Description:

The University of Toronto’s Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Student Association invites submissions from scholars of all disciplines for the 34th Levy-Wasteneys Symposium, “Language of the Revolution”, to be held in Toronto on September 30, 2016. Stemming from the notion that revolution manifests itself in politics as much as it does in history, science, law, music and visual or performing arts, this symposium welcomes reflections on the social, aesthetic and theoretical insurrections at play within the Luso-Hispanic world.

This symposium will be a simultaneous celebration of the centenary since the emergence of Fernando Pessoa’s sensationalism and Vicente Huidobro’s creationism in 1916 – as such critical works related to these avantgarde movements are particularly welcome.

Keynote Speakers:

Beatriz Sarlo (University of Buenos Aires)
Anna María Escóbar (University of Illinois)

Call for Papers:

Suggested themes include:

- Independence and revolutions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
- Tradition or rupture in language and linguistics
- Permutations of scientific and legal discourse
- Aesthetic vanguardism
- Cinematography and image of the revolution
- Printing and social movements
- Literature of national liberation
- Identity, memory, testimony
- Teaching through change
- Dystopia and post-revolution
- Rebellion, silence and censorship

Those interested should submit an abstract of no more than 500 words (Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced) as well as a brief biographical note mentioning the field of study and the academic formation of the individual. Submissions should be emailed to lwsympos at utoronto.ca no later than March 31, 2016. Presenters will be chosen by a multidisciplinary committee from of the Spanish and Portuguese department. More information at: www.LW2016.com .

Contributions that best capture the spirit of the symposium and generate a high level of discussion through engaging subjects will be acknowledged and receive monetary recognitions at the evening reception. The best papers will also be considered for publication in the Association’s annual “Apuntes Hispánicos” journal. The Organizing Committee rejects any mode of intellectual and/or academic dishonesty.
