Meeting Description:

The research group “Intercultural Pragmatic Studies (English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Issues” is pleased to announce the upcoming Seventh International Symposium on Intercultural, Cognitive and Social Pragmatics (EPICS VII, after the Spanish acronym for “Encuentros de Pragmática Intercultural, Cognitiva y Social”). 

EPICS VII will be held on 4-6 May 2016, at Pablo de Olavide University, Seville (Spain).

Plenary speakers: 

- Alexandra Georgakopoulou (King’s College London) 
- Francisco Yus Ramos (University of Alicante). 

Call for Papers:

The 7th EPICS Symposium will be dedicated to pragmatics in communication mediated through the new technologies and how these may be exploited for research in pragmatics and pedagogical purposes pertaining the teaching of pragmatic issues. Under the umbrella theme “Pragmatics in/through the new technologies,'' EPICS VII aims at providing a forum for practitioners of pragmatics and other related disciplines to present on their latest research. 

Presentation Types:

We welcome original papers, written in English, on any of the subjects that come within the list of conference topics below or on any other related topic.

Presentations can be made in any of the following types:

- Individual Oral Presentations 
20 minutes + 10 minutes for Q&As

- Themed Panels 
These must contain a number of thematically-related papers, each of which must be 20 minutes + 10 minutes for Q&As. Proposals for panels should also include a chair.

- Posters
Size: 118,9 x 84,1 cm (A0)
Posters may be printed in colour or in black and white.

Topics:

Presentations may look into, among others, the following:

- The pragmatics of computer- and mobile-mediated communication and online service encounters
- Cyberpragmatics
- (Im)Politeness in computer- and mobile-mediated communication and online service encounters
- Language aggression and conflict in computer- and mobile-mediated communication
- Computer- and mobile-mediated communication in work/academic settings
- Identity in computer- and mobile-mediated communication
- Emotions in computer- and mobile-mediated communication
- Computer-mediated communication for the teaching of pragmatics
- Teaching pragmatics through the new (digital) technologies
- Inter/cross-cultural aspects of computer- and mobile-mediated communication
- Corpus linguistics for research in pragmatics
- Using computer- and mobile-mediated communication in forensic linguistics 

Submissions:

Proposals must be sent as email attachment to both Manuel Padilla Cruz (mpadillacruz at us.es) and Reyes Gómez Morón (rgommor at upo.es). 

Proposals must contain the following information:

- Oral Presentations and Posters
a one-page abstract no longer than 350 words, accompanied by the following information on the same file (word format): 
i. Author’s name(s) and affiliation
ii. Title of paper
iii. Audio-visual equipment required (computer, VHS video, OHP, etc.)
iv. E-mail address(es)
v. Postal address(es)

Please ensure that you name your file following the following format: Surname_name_EPICSVIII. 

- Themed Panels
a one-page abstract no longer than 350 words for the panel, accompanied by the respective 350-word abstracts for each of the presentations included in the panel. The following information must also be included for each of the papers in the panel: 
i. Author’s name(s) and affiliation
ii. Title of paper
iii. Audio-visual equipment required (computer, VHS video, OHP, etc.)
iv. E-mail address(es)
v. Postal address(es)

Dates:

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is 1 December 2015. Proposals will be peer-reviewed and notification of acceptance will be sent by 15 January.
