David Banks has been a leading figure in linguistics, within France and internationally. Founder and President for fourteen years of AFLSF (Association Française de Linguistique Systémique Fonctionnelle), Director of ERLA ( Equipe de Recherche en Linguistique Appliquée), and a key member of GERAS (Groupe d’Etude et de Recherches en Anglais de Spécialité), he has been extremely active in bringing together linguists of different theoretical backgrounds and research interests, in the study of both English and French, initiating projects and hosting regular conferences at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brittany, France, where he has been based for almost three decades and is now Professor emeritus.

Depuis quarante ans, David Banks a joué un rôle important dans le paysage linguistique en France. Anglais d’origine, il a largement contribué à favoriser des rencontres entre linguistes d’horizons théoriques divers, qui travaillent dans des domaines variés de l’anglais, du français, et d’a utres langues. Fondateur de l’AFLSF (Association Française de Linguistique Systémique Fonctionnelle) dont il fut président pendant quatorze ans, ainsi que de l’ERLA (Equipe de Recherche en Linguistique Appliquée), David a également été un membre très actif au sein du GERAS (Groupe d’Etude et de Recherches en Anglais de Spécialité). Il a initié un grand nombre de projets, a édité un nombre conséquent de volumes, sans parler des conférences régulières qu’il organis e depuis trente ans à l’Université de Bretagne Occidentale, où il est désormais Professeur émérite.
