Meeting Description:

The ATrA Conference on linguistic, anthropological, archaeological, historical and philological issues related to areas or times in Africa characterized by phenomena of transition will be taking place in Trieste (Italy) on May 24-26, 2016.

The conference will be the closing event of the three years interdisciplinary ATrA project (www.africantransitions.it), funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities, Education and Research (MIUR) in the framework of its FIRB initiative.

Aim of the Conference is the discussion, on an International level, of the major themes treated during these years by the ATrA team, in order to stimulate a fruitful academic debate on the many facets of identity negotiation, ethnicity and cultural affiliation such as contact, creolization, integration, urbanization, climate or cultural change, language and cultural switch, market exchanges, human migration and any other possible related theme.

Organization of the Event and Themes:

Each one of the three conference days will be dedicated to one of the main disciplines of the ATrA interdisciplinary team and timetable will be organized as follows:

Day 1 / May 24 - Anthropology and Cognition Studies: Keynote speaker em. prof. Signe Lise Howell, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo
Day 2 / May 25 - Linguistics and Philology: Keynote speaker prof. Maarten Mous, Head of the Department of African Languages and Cultures, University of Leiden
Day 3 / May 26 - Archaeology and History: Keynote speaker prof. Paul Lane, Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Uppsala

Themes of Day 1:

1.1 Negotiating Multiple Identities
1.2 Borders, Cultural Areas, Contact and Exchanges
1.3 Indigenousness and the Promotion of Minorities

Themes of Day 2:

2.1 Identity in Oral and Written Tradition
2.2 Borders and Languages in Contact
2.3 Minority Groups, Endangered Languages, and Linguistic Policies

Themes of Day 3:

3.1 Ancient Identities and Material Culture
3.2 Trade Routes, Borders, and Exchanges
3.3 The Study and Management of Archaeological Heritage

2nd Call for Papers:

Deadline for submission of papers or posters once supposed to be November 7 has been moved to November 30. 

Paper or poster proposals must contain title, code of the session to which the proponent applies, an abstract of 300 words max. written in English or French, name, affiliation and e-mail of the proponent(s).

Also, complete panels or workshops are welcome. In this case, the organizers must send us the title, an abstract of the panel  of max 300 words and the names and titles of the participants to the panel/workshop.

Papers, posters, panels or workshops proposals must be sent to the event organizer: imicheli at units.it.

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed and notification of acceptance/refusal will be communicated by December 31 2015. According to the number of proposals accepted, it will be decided if sessions will be held in plenary or in parallel.
