Theme of IACL-24: Chinese Language Teaching and Studies in the Multicultural Context

The 24th Annual Conference of the IACL (IACL-24th) will be held in July 17-19, 2016 at the Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing, China.

Following the tradition, the iacl-24 will also organize a competition of “The Young Scholar Award (YSA)”, and a maximum of 5 (normally 2-4) finalists will be selected, and each will be awarded a travel subsidy (of around $500) and invited to the IACL conference to give an oral presentation at a special session organized for this purpose, before a panel of judges chaired by the IACL President (the review committee of any given year may also recommend that no finalist be invited). The author of the best paper selected by the panel will be honored at the banquet of the annual conference and presented with an award certificate.

The other traditional competition that will be organized is Mantaro J. Hashimoto (MJH) Award for Chinese Historical Phonology which is in the amount of US $500, donated by Professor Anne Yue in memory of the eminent linguist and Sinologist, Professor Mantaro J. Hashimoto. All YSA papers submitted in the field of Chinese historical phonology will automatically be concurrently considered for the MJH Award.

In addition, there will also be a competition for “The Interdisciplinary Research Award (IRA)”annual prize in the amount of US $500, established in the honor of Professor Hsin-I Hsieh for his immense contributions to the IACL and to the field of Chinese Linguistics. All papers with an interdisciplinary approach submitted for YSA will automatically be concurrently considered for this Interdisciplinary Research Award.

Call for Papers:

Part I. Abstracts are invited for talks on the fields of Chinese language teaching and studies as well as studies of languages in China. Each talk will be 15 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author. Non-IACL members must join IACL by March 29, 2016 to be eligible to present at the conference. (1) Abstracts are limited to one page (using 1 inch margins on all sides), including examples and (selected) references. (2) Abstracts can be written in English or Chinese: For English: Please use standard Times New Roman font, size 12 pt; For Chinese: Please use Song(宋体)font, size 12 pt. (3) Abstracts should be sent as two copies, one in the form of a PDF and another in the form of DOC. (4) Abstracts should be anonymous, but please do write down your contact information in your email. In the body of the email message, please include name(s) of author(s), academic rank(s), affiliation(s), abstract title, subcate
 gory, and an e-mail address. Please name the file in the following way:For single-authored papers: LastName_FirstName.pdf; For co-authored papers: LastName_FirstName_co.pdf (list only the first author)

MJH submissions must deal specifically with the area of historical phonology. 3. The Interdisciplinary Research Award (IRA) is an annual prize in the amount of US $500 offered to encourage young scholars who wish to devote themselves to interdisciplinary studies in Chinese linguistics. The prize will be administered as part of the Young Scholar Award (YSA) process. All papers with an interdisciplinary approach submitted for YSA will automatically be concurrently considered for this Interdisciplinary Research Award.

Notification of acceptance: February 29, 2016
