Description:

You will have expertise in Second Language Acquisition. Expertise in syntactic theory and/or language variation (relating to cultural diversity) may be an advantage.

You will be an energetic and inspiring colleague, and will make a major contribution to English Studies at undergraduate level.

You will also be expected to teach in the English track of the MA programmes 'Intercultural Communication', 'Multilingualism and Language Acquisition' and to participate in the Research MA, 'Linguistics: the Study of the Language Faculty'.

You will conduct research in Linguistics at an internationally visible level, and have a demonstrable potential in attracting sources of funding in this area.

You will be an active member of the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics, participating in the research group, Linguistic Theory & Language Acquisition.

You will (co-)supervise PhD projects. You may also assist with the delivery of some language proficiency courses (including academic writing and oral proficiency). You must therefore be fully fluent in English to near-native standard. A native American English accent may be an advantage.

You are required to undertake other duties, administrative or otherwise, such as may reasonably be required.

Qualifications

Essential

- A PhD in a relevant field;
- Fully fluent in English to near-native standard (oral and written);
- Teaching experience in English Studies at university level;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to empathize with students;
- Ability to work in a team and to contribute to collegiality;
- A track record of research and publication (including evidence of publications currently under review with peer-reviewed and internationally recognized journals);
- Experience of submitting grant applications.
- Experience of postgraduate teaching;
- Experience of postgraduate research supervision;

Desirable

- Experience of assessing undergraduate work in English as a foreign language, including translation;
- A track record of successful grant applications;
- Expertise in using IT resources, including virtual learning environments, for teaching purposes, and experience developing online teaching materials;
- Experience of university administration.
- Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO).
- Candidates are expected to be versatile in both Dutch and English; non Dutch-speaking candidates will need to be proficient in the Dutch language within two years.

Offer

The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years. Subject to excellent performance, this will be followed by a permanent position. Salary depends on qualifications and experience and will range from € 4,607.- to € 5,608.- for a full time position, consistent with the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) scale 13 for Dutch Universities. The position carries an initial 70% teaching load.

Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible employment conditions.
