University or Organization: University of Oslo
Job Location: Massachusetts, USA
Job Title: Post-doctoral Research Fellowship
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Pragmatics; Psycholinguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship associated
with the project 'Linguistic and cognitive factors in effective referential
communication' (PI: Paula Rubio-Fernández, University of Oslo).

The Fellowship is funded by the Research Council of Norway (starting salary
NOK 483,700 per year/ approx. $58,128) and will be hosted by Professor Ted
Gibson and his Language Lab (a.k.a. TedLab) at the Department of Brain and
Cognitive Sciences in MIT. The successful candidate is expected to move to
Boston for the 2 years of the Fellowship and join the TedLab together with the
PI in the project.

Aims of the Fellowship

The aim of the research project is to investigate the development of those
pragmatic abilities that sustain effective referential communication across
the lifespan. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to contribute to this
project by investigating the referential abilities of younger and older adults
in interactive tasks, and the relation between these pragmatic abilities and
memory capacity, executive control and Theory of Mind.

As the lead in this subproject, the postdoctoral researcher will design
experiments (including suitable measures for the above cognitive abilities in
an adult group), collect and analyze data (including eye-tracking data during
language production and comprehension), present the results at conferences and
write up the results for publication. The postdoctoral researcher is expected
to work in close collaboration with the PI in the project, who will be leading
the child development component of the project. As part of their
collaboration, the two researchers will develop eye-tracking methods and
analyses suitable for scripted and unscripted referential communication. Also
as part of the project, both researchers will have access to SMI eye-tracking
equipment (a portable tracker for computer-based tasks and eye-tracking
glasses for interactive tasks).

Requirements

- PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Science or Linguistics, with a specialization
in psycholinguistics/experimental pragmatics
- Advanced training and experience with eye-tracking methods in language
research (preferably both language production and comprehension)
- Research proposal to contribute to the project
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position

Submissions

Applicants must submit the following attachments with the electronic
application, preferably in PDF format:

- Application letter
- Curriculum Vitae
- List of publications
- Sample first author publication (preferably including an eye-tracking study
of language production and/or comprehension)
- Project description (approximately 3-5 pages). The project description must
present a feasible progress plan. It is expected that the applicant will be
able to complete the project during the period of appointment.

Important dates

Application deadline: 30th April 2016

Interviews (in person or via Skype): 4th May 2016

Expected start date: 1st November 2016

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through the eLinguistics Foundation,
which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal
Tax number is 45-4211155. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial
advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
