Description:

Postdoctoral research position in corpus and computational linguistics at
Simon Fraser University

Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral fellowship in corpus and
computational linguistics at Simon Fraser University, as part of a project on
evaluative language funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research
Council of Canada.

Successful candidates will contribute to the research project “Opinion,
subjectivity and point of view in language”, with Maite Taboada as PI. The
research group includes graduate students in the Department of Linguistics at
SFU and other collaborators. The project aims at determining how opinion,
subjectivity and point of view are expressed in language, and uncovering the
characteristics of opinionated language. This is a corpus-based project, and
the postdoctoral fellow will mostly be in charge of collecting and organizing
a corpus of opinionated language, including newspaper editorials, reviews,
blogs and online comments. The corpus will be annotated with the main
phenomena that contribute to the interpretation of evaluation and opinion:
words and expressions that convey opinion; operators (negation, nonveridical
operators); discourse and coherence relations. The project is part of ongoing
research in sentiment analysis
(http://www.sfu.ca/~mtaboada/research/Taboada_SSHRC_Summary.pdf).

The candidate should have a PhD in corpus and/or computational linguistics,
with emphasis on collection and organization of large corpora, and
computational methods to analyze language. Familiarity with annotation, in
particular of Appraisal, negation, nonveridicality and coherence relations
will be an asset, as will be expertise with tools for natural language
processing and sentiment analysis.

The term is for 1 year, with a possibility of an extension for another year.
Starting date June 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be
approximately CND $50,000 per year, in addition to some support for conference
travel, and a small research allowance. Employment is governed by SFU’s
policies on postdoctoral fellows
(http://www.sfu.ca/dean-gradstudies/postdocs/Postdocs-Policy.html).

The Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University
(http://www.sfu.ca/linguistics.html) is home to about 15 faculty members in
all areas of linguistics, with diverse theoretical and methodological
perspectives. Simon Fraser University is one of Canada’s top-ranked
universities, with about 30,000 students. The main SFU campus is situated on
Burnaby Mountain in Greater Vancouver, a cosmopolitan area with a metro
population of about 2.5 million. This area of British Columbia is unique in
Canada and is known for its mild climate, outdoor recreation and its highly
multicultural population.

Applications should contain:

(1) A cover letter
(2) A full CV
(3) A statement of research interests
(4) Two sample publications
(5) Names and e-mail addresses of three referees, who may be contacted to
provide either informal references or formal letters of recommendation

Application materials should be e-mailed, preferably as a single pdf file with
the applicant’s last name, to Professor Maite Taboada (mtaboada at sfu.ca), with
the subject line “Postdoc application”. Priority will be given to applications
received by May 1, 2016.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through the eLinguistics Foundation,
which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal
Tax number is 45-4211155. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial
advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
