Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: Morphology; Semantics; Syntax; Typology

Description:

At the Department of German Language and Linguistics a PhD Position (EGr. 13
TV-L HU, 65%) is available for 2 years beginning immediately in the project
''Typology of the Psych-Alternation in Morphology, Syntax, and Discourse'',
funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Based on precise empirical methods, the project will investigate the role of
the morphological root of psych verbs and the syntactic and semantic
properties of the morphological processes that occur in cases of
psych-alternations (causativization, decausativization, conversion, double
derivation). In a sample of six languages, which represent different
morphological types of the causative alternation (Icelandic, Finnish, Korean,
Spanish, Chinese, Hungarian), the project will carry out parallel experiments.

We invite applications for a temporary position for 2 years (EGr. 13 TV-L HU,
65%, according to the German public service pay scale), to be filled by a
doctoral student. The researcher is expected to collaborate in the development
of empirical methods (observational and experimental) for the cross-linguistic
study of the psych-alternation, to conduct empirical research in the
abovementioned languages, and to cooperate in the theoretical modelling of the
experimental data. He/she is expected to present the project results in
scientific conferences and to collaborate in publishing them in linguistic
journals.

The ideal candidate should have prior experience in theoretical linguistics
and experimental methods in linguistics ideally related to morphological,
syntactic and/or semantic research questions. Applicants need to have a
master's degree or equivalent in linguistics or a closely related field. The
preparation of a PhD-dissertation on a topic related to the project is
desired. Good command of English is required, knowledge of German as well as
knowledge in one or more of the object languages will be an advantage.

Candidates are requested to send their applications (cover letter describing
research interests and CV) preferably by E-mail using pdf-documents.

This year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $79,000. This money
will go to help keep the List running by supporting all of our
Student Editors for the coming year.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through the eLinguistics Foundation,
which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal
Tax number is 45-4211155. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial
advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
