Description:

The Department of Languages and Literatures is the Faculty of Arts’ largest
department with 13 different language subjects, around 150 staff members, a
student volume of 1200 full-time equivalents and a yearly turnover of about
SEK 120 million. The Department's research concerns the languages of the world
and their literature from a broad cultural contextualisation and a wide
spectrum of theoretical foundations and specific applications. These are
concentrated around the following research profiles: Diversity and Universals
in the Language; Popular Culture; Languages and Learning; and
Transculturality, Translation and Transmission.

Subject area: English with a linguistic orientation

Specific subject description

The English division at the Department of Languages and Literatures offers
degrees in both English linguistics and English literature at all levels,
including in the third cycle. Apart from freestanding courses, English is part
of the Teacher Education Programme, Business and Economics Programme,
Translation Programme and International Language Programme. At present, the
teaching and research staff in English comprise four professors, four senior
lecturers, one lecturer, two postdoctoral fellows and ten PhD students. The
division’s research in the area of English linguistics is focused on corpus
linguistics, academic writing, language variation and change, historical
linguistics, cultural studies and lexicography.

Job assignments

The posted position mainly comprises teaching and student supervision in the
first and second cycles, within the framework of study programmes and
freestanding courses, on campus or online. Contributions will be required in
the University of Gothenburg’s Translation Programme, and to some extent also
within the Teachers´Education Programme. Research activities will also be
required. As the successful applicant will be expected to participate broadly
in the Department’s activities. Other duties may be required as well.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 -
4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. To be eligible for the position, the
applicant must hold a doctoral degree and have demonstrated teaching
expertise.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are
given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. In the
assessment of qualifications, equal attention will be given to pedagogical and
scholarly competence in the relevant subject area. Special attention will be
given to documented qualifications within the following areas:

- Teaching expertise, demonstrated through experience of planning and
execution of educational activities, including supervision/tutoring and
examination.
- Scholarly competence, which will be assessed in relation to degree of
originality, international orientation and future outlook. 
- Qualifications regarding cooperation with the surrounding community. 
- Experience with study programmes, primarily within translation but also
within teacher education. 
- Ability to speak and write in Swedish at a native level. 
- Ability to lead and administer teaching activities (for example background
as a course director/coordinator).

In addition to expert assessment, the recruitment process will include trial
lectures and interviews.
