Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas:
Multilingualism

Description:

A number of PhD studentships are available as part of the 'Multilingualism:
Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies' project (MEITS), funded by the
AHRC under the Open World Research Initiative. The project is led by Cambridge
(PI Wendy Ayres-Bennett), with partners in Queen's Belfast, Nottingham and
Edinburgh. For details see: http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/9951/

Three fully-funded 3-year PhD studentships are available at the University of
Cambridge in conjunction with the research project 'Multilingualism:
Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies (MEITS)', funded by the AHRC
under the Open World Research Initiative to promote modern languages in the
UK. The project is led by the University of Cambridge (PI Wendy
Ayres-Bennett), and comprises a team of 13 other Co-Is, 14 Post-doctoral
researchers and 6 PhD students who will be based at the University of
Cambridge and at the three partner universities, Edinburgh, Nottingham and
Queen's Belfast.

MEITS is an exciting multidisciplinary project, which includes 6 research
strands which will explore multilingualism from a range of perspectives. We
are seeking to recruit three PhD candidates who will work respectively on
Stand 1: Arts of identity: literature, cinema, culture and citizenship in a
globalizing Europe; S4. The influence of multilingual identity on foreign
language learning; and S6: Multilingualism and cognition: implications for
motivation, health and well-being. The project has a number of key non-HEI
partners and there is an important policy and public engagement dimension to
the work. We expect candidates for the studentships to be open to exploring
and developing new interdisciplinary approaches and, if necessary, to learn a
new language. Further details of each of the research projects are given in
the Further Information document available on the University of Cambridge Job
Opportunities page.

The studentships will start in October 2016. Funding will cover the University
Composition Fee and an annual stipend for three years to RCUK minimum level
(2016/17: £14,296); due to funding restrictions, the studentship/project is
only available to those who are either UK or EU nationals. For further
information about the studentships, please contact the proposed supervisor(s)
listed below. Further information about the project can be obtained from
Professor Wendy Ayres-Bennett (wmb1001 at cam.ac.uk).

Applicants for each of the studentships should have:

- A First or Upper-Second (2.i) class first degree in the relevant discipline;
- (Or be expected to achieve) a distinction in a relevant Masters programme;
- Excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work as
part of a multidisciplinary research team;
- The standing needed to meet the graduate admissions entrance requirements of
the University of Cambridge.

Admissions. Instead, please complete a GRADSAF 2016/17 paper application form
(available at
http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply/applying-paper) and email
this, along with your CV and a supporting statement to wmb1001 at cam.ac.uk

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Indiana University and
as such can receive donations through the eLinguistics Foundation,
which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal
Tax number is 45-4211155. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial
advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that
they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization.
Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department
and sending us a form that the eLinguistics Foundation fills in and
returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative
procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
