Pragmatics, Discourse and Society: A Festschrift for Akin Odebunmi

Akin Odebunmi, a renowned linguist of international standing and Professor of
Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis at the University of Ibadan Nigeria, will
turn 50 in December, 2017. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation and Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, University of
Freiburg, Germany. His outstanding academic career has not only been indexed
by the high volume of postgraduate students he has successfully supervised but
also by the magnitude of his publications and the considerable depth of his
research which have inspired many scholars and attracted international
attention. His research concerns, which have covered theoretical and empirical
grounds in medical pragmatics, literary discourse and sundry other genres with
high contextual constraints, have demonstrated his commitment to strict
engagement with textual and discursive salience and pragma-discoursal
properties at the micro and macro levels of interpretation. To celebrate
Professor Akin Odebunmi’s academic prowess and golden jubilee, a festschrift
tentatively entitled Pragmatics, Discourse and Society: A Festschrift for Akin
Odebunmi is being planned. Theoretical and empirical papers are, therefore,
invited from the Nigerian and international academic communities on the
following (and other related) areas of Professor Odebunmi's research foci:

1. The interface of pragmatics, discourse and society
2. Current theoretical orientations in pragmatics and discourse analysis
3. The semantics/pragmatics division of labour
4. Contextual beliefs/common ground in discursive contexts
5. Language/literature and Medicine
6. Medical pragmatics
7. Medical conversation analysis
8. Discourse and digital practices
9. Literary discourse
10. Ideology in discursive contexts
11. Language, ideology and media discourse
12. Context-influenced interpretations of discourses in non-native contexts
13. Pragmatic/discourse strategies in institutional and non-institutional
contexts
14. Face and (im)politeness in institutional and non-institutional settings
15. Discourse features of academic writing
16. Coded communication and goal management strategies in discursive contexts
17. Agency and accountability in communicative encounters
18. Stance and appraisal in discursive contexts
19. Mathematical orientations in discourse analysis
20. Participation framework in interactive contexts
21. Markedness and code alternation in texts and discourses
22. Metaphor and cognition in texts and discourses.
