Description:

The Labex EFL (Paris) invites applications for two PhD positions in Typology
and dynamics of linguistic systems (Labex EFL Strand 3). Within the framework
of the LABEX Empirical Foundations of Linguistics
(http://www.labex-efl.org/?q=en), the PhD projects should be related to one of
the following research topics (details are available on the website
(http://axe3.labex-efl.org/?q=en):

1.Diachronic Change, Phyla and Reconstruction Models 
RT1. Reconstruction, internal classification and grammatical description in
the world’s two biggest phylums: Niger-Congo and Austronesian (PI: Isabelle
Bril, Alexandre François & Valentin Vydrin)
RT3. Long term typological changes in languages (PI: Christiane
Pilot-Raichoor)

2. Modelizing Language Contact and Linguistic Areas 
LC1. Multifactorial analysis of language contact and language changes (PI:
Isabelle Léglise)
LC2. Areal phenomena in northern sub-saharan Africa (PI: Dmitry Idiatov, Mark
Van de Velde)
LC3. Languages, dialects and isoglosses in the Caucasus/Iran/Anatolia area
(PI: Anaïd Donabedian, Pollet Samvelian)
LC4. Les parlers du Croissant : une aire de contact entre oc et oïl (PI:
Nicolas Quint)

3. Grammar and Discourse: Modelling Interfaces 
GD1. The typology and corpus annotation of information structure and
grammatical relations (PI: Katharina Haude, Martine Vanhove)
GD2. The Syntax of Complex Sentence in Creole Languages (PI: Stefano Manfredi,
Nicolas Quint)
GD3. Compared analysis of the discourse markers (PI: Christine Bonnot)
GD4. A joint typological, historical and quantitative approach to the
inter-relation between tense, aspect, modality & evidentiality (PI: Patrick
Caudal)

The research will be conducted at one of the research units involved in the
above projects (CRLAO, HTL, LACITO, LIPN, LLACAN, LLF, LPP-P3, MII, Sedyl).
The research will be directed by one of the senior members of the research
groups mentioned above. 

The positions are available for 36 months starting between 1 October 2016 and
1 January 2017. 

Salary : 1500 to 1700 euros according to the standard official doctoral salary
in France. 

Candidates should have a background in linguistics. The working languages are
French and English. 

Applicants from outside France are encouraged to apply.

The PHD thesis can be written in French or English.

We strongly advise you to contact the future thesis director before applying,
their acceptance is mandatory for the application. A joint supervision
involving two research units will be encouraged, as well as “co-tutelles” with
a university abroad. You may contact us if you need further information on
potential thesis directors.

Candidates should provide (in French or in English) a research project (3-4
pages + references), a CV, documents indicating the courses taken and grades
obtained during their BA and Masters, the letter of recommendation from the
future thesis director, together with a letter of motivation clearly
indicating why they believe to be suitable for a position within the chosen
team. In addition, we ask that two academic references are sent separately to
the same email addresses by 21 September 2016. 

Interviews will be done with preselected candidates during the last week of
September 2016. Decision will occur early October 2016.
